Congratulations, Subaru! As a carmaker who’s focused on safety and providing customers with the best, their newest vehicle, the 2019 Ascent, makes the cut. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has recently announced that the 2019 Ascent, made by Subaru, is the latest vehicle in the group to earn that accolade for Top Safety Pick. Of course, this prestigious award is only given to vehicles that can pass the IIHS’s multitude of tests, which includes ancillary system evaluations and traditional crash testing.
The Subaru Ascent dominated all the crash tests from IIHS and received a Good rating in every crash test it was part of, as well as all their subcategories. These subcategories focus on how various parts of the body could react in a collision, and the crash-test dummies all reacted similarly and correctly. Along with such, the Ascent aced the newest test called the passenger-side test, which focuses more on the safety of the passenger. Many older vehicles have trouble passing such a test, but the 2019 Subaru Ascent passed with flying colors.
Of course, the newest model has EyeSight as a standard feature, which is a driver-assist technology that can monitor traffic, warn you about switching lanes, and brake for you in an emergency, among others. The IIHS rated it as Superior. The Ascent actually avoided collisions at speeds of 25 and 12 mph. The IIHS also gave the Ascent top marks for child-seat evaluations.
Not Created Equal
It’s important to note that the 2019 Ascent has a variety of trim levels and not all of them tested the best for headlights. For example, the halogen headlights, primarily found on the Premium and Base trims, got a Poor rating, which is the worst IIHS offers. It was caused because of inadequate visible around curves and also because it has excessive glare on the low-beams.
However, the LED headlights, found on the Touring and Limited trims, got a Good rating from IIHS, which is enough to keep it in the category of Top Safety Pick.
The Ascent isn’t the only Subaru to make Top Safety Pick for 2018 or 2019. The Legacy, Crosstreck, Outback, Impreza, and WRX are also Top Safety Picks. Therefore, if you want something rated the best and safest vehicle on the market, Subaru likely has what you need.
