Anyone in the U.S. who pays even the slightest bit of attention to the media knows who Elon Musk is. If you don’t, Elon Musk is a South African-born American business investor and engineer, mostly known for starting the Tesla and Space-X companies. He was actually ranked at No. 21 on Forbes 2016 list of the World’s Most Powerful People, and was also ranked 53rd richest person in the world by Forbes, as well. Today, Musk’s Tesla company has taken the spotlight among other older car startups. What is it about the Tesla that makes it so popular? Here are 10 facts about Elon Musk’s Tesla car that you need to know.
Tesla Runs on a Rechargeable Battery
The main reason why Tesla cars are so famous is because of how they’re powered. The Tesla car is an electrically powered vehicle that charges like a phone, in the sense that you need to charge it, preferably every night, before driving it. So how do you recharge when you’re not at home? You can’t just go to a gas station. It’s not a problem because Tesla has over 8,000 charging stations around the U.S. for drivers to restore their Tesla batteries at when they’re on the road.
Tesla Is One of the Big Guys
When Tesla released its first car, the Roadster, in 2008, it quickly became a favorite for many American people. So much so, that Tesla motors is listed as the 2nd oldest American car startup, second only to Ford. That’s pretty crazy when you consider the magnitude of other American car companies. Tesla cars have proven to be one of the most successful big guys in the car manufacturing industry, despite not being in the playing field for very long.
Tesla Cars are Fast
Tesla cars are designed to be fast. Not just fast, but accurate too. In fact, the Model X car is practically a speed devil. It actually has a ‘Ludicrous’ speed mode that allows the car to go from 0-60 mph in a record-breaking 3.2 seconds! Although it sounds impossible, this means the engine behind the car is genuinely very well-built and powerful enough to push the car to such a high speed in such a short amount of time.
Tesla Cars are Strong and Futuristic
According to many old novels and stories, the world should have had flying cars by now. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten there yet, but Musk’s Tesla cars are the closest we have. The Tesla car’s design is strong enough to practically weather a tornado in; its walls are built to be 6 mm thick, and it has a biohazard air filter for… nuclear radiation? A zombie virus? Who knows? But it’s still very futuristic when compared to other cars on the market.
Tesla Cars are Super Safe
Elon Musk’s Tesla car was designed with all of the standard safety features found in every car, and then some. These cars are given five-out-of-five stars for overall safety, and have the best designed parking sensors. The Model S actually became the first electric car to receive the ‘MotorTrends Car of the Year Award’. Plus, the Tesla car has its personal owner’s manual saved in its directory in case the owner needs it. Because who has time to look through a book? Not Tesla owners.
Tesla’s Battery Life is Phenomenal
Many people think that having a electrical battery-powered car would be annoying. How are you supposed to charge your car if you’re away from a charging station, and don’t have any other way to charge? You can’t siphon electricity into your car! You don’t need to because the chances of that happening are very slim due to Tesla’s battery life lasting for quite some miles. Owners can expect to drive between 240-257 miles on a single complete charge.
You Don’t Even Need a Key
It used to be cool to have an electric key and on/off button start button for your car. But those days are over. Tesla’s cars don’t even need a key to be operated. Once you open the car door and take a seat, the car automatically turns on. You can drive around, have some fun, and when you’re ready to get out, you can just get out! Getting out of the car and shutting the door powers off the battery. No more lost keys or locked car doors!
Connect with Your Phone
After all of this, pairing a device with a smartphone seems kind of lame. But how many cars do you know that have their own remote-control app? Tesla has a mobile app that you can download on your smartphone, and do just that. You Tesla car can be paired with your device, and the app allows you to preheat your car in winter, turn it on without any key, and even locate where your car is parked in case you forget.
You Can Use Autopilot
This is the point where the Tesla cars really follow the ‘go big or go home’ saying. Tesla cars come equipped with an intuitive Autopilot function that steers your car almost completely on its own. There are some rules of safety that apply, and the Autopilot function isn’t always available, but just having that option makes it so much easier to get through those long drives late at night on straight, endless roads. That being said, there’s no autopilot function for the driver using their own common sense on when to use it.
Teslas are Exclusive to Tesla
Tesla cars aren’t sold in any dealerships other than Tesla. That’s not really an issue because there are just so many Tesla dealerships open. The real issues when it comes to buying a Tesla are the price and the waiting list. Because Tesla makes every car to order, you have to order one for yourself a few years in advance and basically wait your turn for your car to be delivered to you. Most importantly, Teslas can cost anywhere from $70,000-$100,000 dollars, so choose your model wisely.
